What does this fault code mean?

Before the engine is allowed to start, the ECM compares the immobilizer code with the CEM and also checks its own serial number against the BCM's. The fault is set if the supply drops during the check or if the numbers do not match. The engine will not start. The fault applies to the C30, C70 (06-), S40 (04-) and V50.

    Possible causes

    • Low battery voltage
    • Poor contact, corrosion or contact resistance at the ECM connector
    • Short to ground or open circuit in the supply or earth wire to the ECM
    • Break in the CAN wiring
    • Wrong ignition key
    • BCM not intended for this car, for example a used module with other software or hardware

    What you can do

    1. 1Check that you are using the correct ignition key and that the battery voltage is normal
    2. 2Check the ECM connector for looseness, contact resistance and corrosion
    3. 3With a multimeter, check that the ECM supply wire is not shorted to ground and has no open circuit
    4. 4Visually inspect the CAN wiring for breaks and chafing
    5. 5Work on the brake control module (BCM) should go to a workshop, as it controls the braking system; a workshop can compare the serial numbers

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • The engine will not start

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
