What does this fault code mean?
The ECM feeds the start relay a signal at engine start, and that signal controls the starter motor. The code is set when the control module detects that the signal is too low. A short to ground in the signal wire is a possible cause.
Possible causes
- The signal wire is shorted to ground
What you can do
- 1With the ignition off, check the connectors in the signal circuit for loose fit and oxidation
- 2Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire to the start relay is not shorted to ground (the body)
- 3Check that the signal wire is not chafed or pinched where it runs near the body or moving parts
- 4Repair as needed and road test the car to see whether the code returns
- 5If the fault remains after these checks, have a workshop trace the control module and the start relay further
Symptoms you may notice2
- The engine does not start
- A message appears in the information display
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
