What does this fault code mean?
The ECM checks that the brake pedal sensor and stop lamp switch signals can be trusted while the engine runs. The code is set if the fault lies in the sensor circuit, the stop lamp switch circuit or the communication with the brake control module (BCM). It mainly shows up as the cruise control not working.
Possible causes
- The BCM or the CEM has a fault
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections between the engine control module and the stop lamp switch
- Open circuit in the voltage supply to the stop lamp switch
- Open circuit or short to ground or voltage in the wire to the stop lamp switch
- The stop lamp switch is incorrectly fitted or damaged
What you can do
- 1Read the codes stored in the BCM and the CEM first, and remedy them; they must be dealt with before this code
- 2If you have diagnostic equipment, read the stop lamp switch status in live data while you press and release the brake pedal; the status should change between off and on
- 3If the status changes as it should when the pedal is pressed, the fault is not present at the moment
- 4Make sure the stop lamp switch is seated correctly: closed with the pedal pressed, open when the pedal is released
- 5Check the stop lamp switch and control module connectors for contact resistance and oxidation; use a multimeter to check the wire for breaks or a short to ground
- 6The brake system is safety-critical, so have a workshop carry out the brake-related measurements and checks you cannot do yourself
Symptoms you may notice3
- Cruise control will not engage
- Warning symbol and text message in the display
- Cruise control does not work at all
What the fault can affect1
- Cruise control is switched off
