What does this fault code mean?
The throttle unit has its own electronics (ETM) that run internal tests on its processor, software and memory. If one of the tests fails, the throttle module reports it to the engine control module (ECM), which keeps the code in memory. The throttle is then controlled in a limited way for as long as the fault is active, which is noticeable while driving.
Possible causes
- Defective throttle unit
What you can do
- 1Read off the fault codes, note ECM-910E, erase it and test drive the car to see whether the fault returns
- 2Check that the throttle is not blocked by dirt or objects and that it does not stick
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: read the DTC status of ECM-910E after the test drive and see whether the fault is active or gone
- 4If the fault returns after the test drive, the throttle unit is probably defective. A new unit is supplied without software, so have a workshop fit it and program it
Symptoms you may notice5
- The accelerator pedal is ignored when the brake pedal is pressed
- The cruise control cannot be activated
- The idle is uneven and the car jerks during engine braking
- Throttle response is very poor if the fault is detected repeatedly within the same driving cycle
- The electronic throttle system (ETS) warning lamp is lit
What the fault can affect3
- During the driving cycle when the fault is active, engine speed is controlled by fuel cut-off following the accelerator pedal position, and the cruise control is switched off
- If the fault is detected repeatedly within the same driving cycle, throttle motor control is disabled, the throttle returns to its mechanical stop position and engine speed is limited considerably
- Normal operation returns the next time the car is started if the fault is no longer present
