What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module (ECM) controls the throttle unit motor with a PWM signal and monitors it. The code is set if the signal is faulty, for example because of loose connections or an open signal cable. It is also set if the driver stage for the throttle unit, which is built into the ECM, registers too high a temperature. The throttle may also have stuck because of dirt or ice.

    Possible causes

    • Loose connectors, with contact resistance or corroded contacts
    • Open circuit on the signal cable
    • Damaged throttle unit
    • The throttle sticks or is blocked, for example by an oil film, dust or ice

    What you can do

    1. 1Check the connector at the throttle unit for loose connections, contact resistance and oxidation
    2. 2Check that the throttle is not blocked and has not stuck, and clean it if necessary
    3. 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal cable has no open circuit and no contact with ground (the body)
    4. 4If you have a diagnostic tool: activate the throttle unit and listen for a ticking sound when it is activated. It should deactivate automatically after a while
    5. 5Erase the fault code and test drive. If it returns and nothing above has been found, the throttle unit is probably damaged and a workshop should replace it

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • The engine produces less power than normal

    What the fault can affect1

    • Engine torque is limited

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
