What does this fault code mean?
The throttle module (ETM) checks that the engine control module (ECM) requests a feasible throttle position and has time to complete its calculations in each work cycle. If the request is infeasible or the ECM does not respond as expected, the code is set. The cause can be a defective engine control module or an inadequate power supply to it.
Possible causes
- Defective engine control module
- Inadequate power supply to the engine control module
What you can do
- 1Check the battery condition and voltage at start-up, as low voltage can be an external cause of the fault
- 2If you have a diagnostic tool: read when the fault was recorded and how often. If it has happened several times without an external cause, the engine control module may be defective
- 3Check that the correct software is in the throttle unit and the engine control module, as software that does not match can set the code. Have a workshop check this
- 4Erase the codes and reset: ignition off for three minutes, on and off again, then three more. Add two minutes if the cooling fan has been running.
- 5If the fault returns without an external cause, have a workshop replace and check the engine control module
Symptoms you may notice4
- The accelerator pedal is ignored when the brake pedal is pressed
- The cruise control cannot be activated
- The idle is uneven and the car jerks during engine braking
- The ETS warning lamp lights, on C70 and S/V70 -2000 only
What the fault can affect3
- The throttle follows the accelerator pedal position, and engine speed is controlled by fuel cut-off with the injectors switched off one at a time
- The cruise control is switched off during the driving cycle when the fault is present, and it works again the next time the car starts if the fault is gone
- Braking closes the throttle, and pedal input is ignored while the brake is pressed
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
