What does this fault code mean?
The throttle module (ETM) continuously compares the values of its two internal throttle position sensors. If the difference between them is too large for too long, the information is sent to the engine control module, which stores the code. The code is probably the result of other faults, so those should be remedied first. On cars with upgraded software (from 2006 or later) the code is mainly an information code.
Possible causes
- The software in the throttle unit has not been upgraded
- Low voltage supply to the throttle unit due to loose connections
- Poor earth connection to the throttle unit
- Damaged throttle unit
What you can do
- 1First check whether the fault codes ECM-9150 or ECM-9160 are stored. If so, troubleshoot them first
- 2Use the frozen values and counters to see when the fault occurred and how often. If battery voltage was low at start, check the battery charge and its connections.
- 3Check that the correct software is in the throttle unit and the ECM. If the software is not upgraded, an upgrade may solve it, which a workshop should do.
- 4Erase the codes and reset: ignition off for three minutes, on and off again, then three more. Add two minutes if the cooling fan has been running.
- 5If the fault remains after the upgrade, the throttle unit may need to be replaced. Repeat the test several times at different temperatures, as the fault can depend on temperature
Symptoms you may notice3
- The accelerator pedal is ignored when the brake pedal is pressed
- The cruise control cannot be activated
- The ETS warning lamp lights, on C70 and S/V70 -2000 only
What the fault can affect3
- Braking closes the throttle, and pedal input is ignored while the brake is pressed
- The cruise control is switched off during the driving cycle when the fault was detected, and it is available again the next time the car starts if the fault is gone
- While the fault is active, the throttle is shut off during the driving cycle
