What does this fault code mean?
The throttle module (ETM) checks that the two internal throttle position sensors give values within permitted limits and agree with each other. If the signal from one sensor is outside the limits for too long, or the sensors differ too much, the throttle module sends the information to the engine control module, which stores the code. The code can be set together with other fault codes, and the root cause may be among them.
Possible causes
- Low voltage supply to the throttle unit due to loose connections
- Poor ground connection to the throttle unit
- Defective throttle unit
What you can do
- 1Read off the fault codes and first remedy the other stored fault codes, as the root cause may be among them
- 2Check the connectors at the throttle unit for loose connections and oxidation, and make sure the earth connection and power supply are firmly attached
- 3If you have a diagnostic tool: follow the throttle position from position sensor 1 in live data and check that the value changes smoothly when the accelerator pedal is pressed and released
- 4Erase the code and test drive. If it returns with connectors and earths checked, the throttle unit is probably defective; a workshop replaces it and adapts it.
Symptoms you may notice4
- The accelerator pedal is ignored when the brake pedal is pressed
- The cruise control does not work at all
- The idle is uneven
- The engine shudders strongly after engine braking
What the fault can affect3
- Braking closes the throttle, and pedal input is ignored while the brake is pressed
- The cruise control is switched off during the driving cycle when the fault was detected, and it works again the next time the car starts if the fault is gone
- Together with fault code ECM-9160, the throttle motor control is switched off, the throttle goes to its mechanical stop position and engine speed is controlled by fuel cut-off
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
