What does this fault code mean?
The throttle module (ETM) checks that the two internal throttle position sensors give values within permitted limits and agree with each other. If the signal from one sensor is outside the limits for too long, or the difference between them becomes too large, the code is set. It can be set together with other fault codes, and the root cause may be among them.
Possible causes
- Low voltage supply to the throttle unit due to loose connections
- Poor ground connection to the throttle unit
- Defective throttle unit
What you can do
- 1First remedy the other throttle unit fault codes, as the root cause may be among them
- 2Check that the power supply and earth connection to the throttle unit are firmly attached and free of corrosion
- 3Check the connectors at the throttle unit and the engine control module for loose connections and oxidation
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: follow the throttle position from position sensor 2 in live data and check that the value follows the accelerator pedal without jumps
- 5Erase the code and test drive. If it returns with connectors checked, the throttle unit may be defective; a workshop replaces it and adapts it.
Symptoms you may notice5
- The accelerator pedal is ignored when the brake pedal is pressed
- The ETS warning lamp lights, on C70 and S/V70 -2000 only
- The idle is uneven and the car jerks during engine braking, but only together with ECM-9150
- Throttle response is very poor and top speed is reduced, but only together with ECM-9150
- The cruise control does not work at all
What the fault can affect3
- Braking closes the throttle, and pedal input is ignored while the brake is pressed
- Together with ECM-9150, the throttle motor control is switched off, the throttle goes to its mechanical stop position and engine speed is controlled by fuel cut-off
- The cruise control is switched off during the driving cycle when the fault was detected, and it works again the next time the car starts if the fault is gone
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
