What does this fault code mean?
The ECM and the throttle module (ETM) both read the accelerator pedal position from the pedal sensor through a PWM signal. If the throttle unit detects that the two signals differ for too long, or that the ECM requests a throttle angle that does not match the pedal position, the code is stored. It can be set together with other fault codes for the accelerator pedal signals, and the root cause may be among them.
Possible causes
- Power supply to the engine control module
- Power supply to the accelerator pedal sensor
- Defective accelerator pedal sensor
- Fault in the PWM signal cable between the engine control module and the throttle unit
What you can do
- 1First remedy any other stored fault codes for the accelerator pedal signals, such as ECM-9180 or ECM-918F, as they determine how the troubleshooting should go
- 2Read the frozen values and counters: when did the fault occur and how often? If battery voltage was low at start, check the battery condition and charge.
- 3Check the connector at the accelerator pedal sensor and the engine control module for loose connections and oxidation
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: follow the accelerator pedal position in live data and check that the value changes smoothly when the pedal is pressed and released
- 5Erase the fault code and test drive. If it returns, have a workshop check the accelerator pedal sensor and the signal cable, and ask whether upgraded software is available for the car
Symptoms you may notice3
- The accelerator pedal is ignored when the brake pedal is pressed
- The cruise control cannot be activated
- The ETS warning lamp lights, on C70 and S/V70 -2000 only
What the fault can affect2
- Braking closes the throttle, and pedal input is ignored while the brake is pressed
- The cruise control is switched off during the driving cycle when the fault was detected, and it works again the next time the car starts if the fault is gone
