What does this fault code mean?
The throttle unit (ETM) has found a problem with the PWM signal coming from the pedal sensor, and the engine control module (ECM) stores the code. The fault can be a signal that is too high or too low, or a signal cable that is open or short-circuited. The code is always set together with ECM-918F and is therefore troubleshot according to that code.
Possible causes
- Signal cable short-circuited to the supply
- Signal cable short-circuited to ground
- Open circuit in the signal cable
- Loose connections
- Defective accelerator pedal sensor
What you can do
- 1First remedy fault code ECM-918F, as this code is always set together with ECM-9180
- 2Check the connector at the accelerator pedal sensor and the engine control module for loose connections and oxidation
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal cable from the accelerator pedal sensor has no open circuit and is not short-circuited to ground or voltage
- 4Check the battery condition and charge
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool: follow the accelerator pedal position in live data and check that the value changes smoothly when the pedal is pressed and released
- 6Erase the fault code and test drive. If it returns, have a workshop check the accelerator pedal sensor
Symptoms you may notice5
- The accelerator pedal is ignored when the brake pedal is pressed
- The ETS warning lamp lights, on C70 and S/V70 -2000 only
- The idle is uneven and the car jerks during engine braking
- Throttle response is very poor
- Top speed is reduced
What the fault can affect2
- The throttle unit switches off its motor control, so the throttle moves to its mechanical stop position and engine speed is controlled by fuel cut-off
- The idle can feel very uneven because engine speed is then controlled by fuel cut-off. This is a result of the reconfiguration and should not be confused with an actual driveability fault
