What does this fault code mean?
The throttle unit (ETM) has detected an unreasonably high or low current through the throttle torque motor, a faulty status feedback from its drive circuits, or a throttle disc that does not move despite a control signal. The engine control module (ECM) stores the code, which can be set together with other fault codes.
Possible causes
- Insufficient power supply to the throttle unit
- Poorly charged battery or corroded connecting cables
- Defective throttle unit
What you can do
- 1Use the frozen values and counters of the fault code to see whether it was set at engine start and whether battery voltage was very low then
- 2If battery voltage was very low at start, check the battery charge and the connections to the battery, chassis and battery cables for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3If the frozen values show that battery voltage was normal, the throttle unit may need to be replaced by a workshop
- 4Erase the codes and reset: ignition off for three minutes, on and off again, then three more. Add two minutes if the cooling fan has been running.
Symptoms you may notice5
- The accelerator pedal is ignored when the brake pedal is pressed
- The cruise control cannot be activated
- The idle is uneven and the car jerks during engine braking
- Throttle response is very poor and top speed is reduced
- The ETS warning lamp lights, on C70 and S/V70 -2000 only
What the fault can affect3
- Braking closes the throttle, and pedal input is ignored while the brake is pressed
- The cruise control is switched off during the driving cycle when the fault was detected, and it works again the next time the car starts if the fault is gone
- On turbo engines and 6-cylinder naturally aspirated engines, during driving cycles when the fault is active, engine speed follows the pedal through fuel cut-off, and the throttle is switched off
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
