What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) has registered a faulty signal in the control of the throttle. The cause can be a sticking throttle, poor contacts or damaged wiring to the damper motor, a defective throttle unit, or faulty software in the ECM.
Possible causes
- The throttle sticks or is blocked by oil film or dust
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors between the ECM and the throttle unit
- Open circuit or short-circuit to ground or voltage in the wiring to the damper motor
- The wiring to the damper motor is short-circuited to itself
- Defective throttle unit
- Faulty software in the engine control module
What you can do
- 1If you have a diagnostic tool, read the fault status of the code with the engine running and see whether the fault is active
- 2Check the connectors at the throttle unit and the engine control module for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the damper motor wiring has no open circuit and is not short-circuited to ground, voltage or each other
- 4Check that the throttle is not blocked by any object and is not sticking, and clean it if necessary
- 5Have a workshop check whether the engine control module software needs reloading, and carry out an adaptation of the throttle unit afterwards
Symptoms you may notice2
- The Check engine lamp lights
- The car's performance is reduced
What the fault can affect1
- The ECM switches off the supply to the throttle motor, and the throttle moves to its spring-returned position
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
