What does this fault code mean?
The throttle unit (ETM) compares the requested and actual values in its internal governor and checks the current through the throttle torque motor. If the difference is too large or the current too high, the information is sent to the engine control module, which stores the code. The code can be set together with other fault codes.
Possible causes
- An object, oil film, dust or similar is blocking the throttle
- Poorly charged battery or corroded connecting cables
- The power supply to the throttle unit is inadequate
- Defective throttle unit
What you can do
- 1Read off the fault codes and first troubleshoot ECM-9150 and/or ECM-9160 if they are stored
- 2If the code followed low battery voltage at start, check the battery charge and the connections to the battery, chassis and battery cables for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Check the throttle carefully for dirt, deposits or sticking, and make sure nothing blocks it. Clean the throttle unit if it is dirty
- 4If oil film coats the throttle, the nipple connecting the intake pipe to the oil trap may need cleaning
- 5Have a workshop check that the correct software is in the throttle unit and the engine control module, as upgraded software may be the solution
- 6If the code returns despite these checks, the throttle unit may need replacing by a workshop, which also carries out the adaptation
Symptoms you may notice5
- The accelerator pedal is ignored when the brake pedal is pressed
- The cruise control cannot be activated
- The idle is uneven and the car jerks during engine braking
- Throttle response is very poor and top speed is reduced, but only on 5-cylinder engines with DENSO electronics
- The ETS warning lamp lights, on C70 and S/V70 -2000 only
What the fault can affect3
- The throttle follows the accelerator pedal position, and engine speed is controlled by fuel cut-off with the injectors switched off one at a time
- The cruise control is switched off during the driving cycle when the fault was detected, and it works again the next time the car starts if the fault is gone
- On 5-cylinder naturally aspirated engines the throttle is switched off and moves to its mechanical stop position
