What does this fault code mean?
Each time the ignition is switched on, the throttle unit (ETM) checks that the throttle is in its mechanical rest position. If either of the two throttle position sensor values is outside the expected range, the information is sent to the engine control module, which stores the code. The code can be set together with other fault codes.
Possible causes
- Insufficient power supply to the throttle unit
- Poorly charged battery or corroded connecting cables
- Damaged electronic throttle module (ETM)
What you can do
- 1Read off the fault codes and first troubleshoot ECM-9150 and/or ECM-9160 if they are stored
- 2If the code followed low battery voltage at start, check the battery charge and the connections to the battery, chassis and battery cables for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Have a workshop check whether the upgraded software is available for the car, as it allows a wider range for the throttle position sensor values
- 4Erase the codes and reset: ignition off for three minutes, on and off again, then three more. Add two minutes if the cooling fan has been running.
- 5If the code returns despite these checks, the throttle unit may need replacing by a workshop
Symptoms you may notice3
- The accelerator pedal is ignored when the brake pedal is pressed
- The cruise control cannot be activated
- The ETS warning lamp lights, on C70 and S/V70 -2000 only
What the fault can affect3
- The throttle closes when braking, and pedal input is ignored while the brake is pressed
- The cruise control is switched off during the driving cycle when the fault was detected, and it works again the next time the car starts if the fault is gone
- For this particular fault no substitute values are brought into use
