What does this fault code mean?

The throttle unit (ETM) measures the current through the throttle drive motor and compares it with the voltage to the motor. If they do not match for too long, the information is sent to the engine control module, which stores the code. The code can be set together with other fault codes.

    Possible causes

    • Inadequate power supply to the throttle unit
    • Poorly charged battery or corroded connecting cables
    • Defective throttle unit

    What you can do

    1. 1See whether the code came at engine start and whether battery voltage was very low then. Battery charge, corroded contacts or poor battery cables may be the cause.
    2. 2Check that the connectors to the throttle unit are firmly seated and that it has power and earth connections. When the ignition is switched on it should beep briefly
    3. 3Check that the battery voltage and charge status are normal, and that the battery cables and their connections are in good condition and not corroded
    4. 4Erase the fault codes and reset: ignition off for three minutes, on again, then three more minutes. If the fault can still be recreated, have a workshop replace the throttle unit
    5. 5Ask the workshop whether upgraded software is available for the car, as it is much more tolerant of brief interference

    Symptoms you may notice3

    • The accelerator pedal is ignored when the brake pedal is pressed
    • The cruise control cannot be activated
    • The ETS warning lamp lights, on C70 and S/V70 -2000 only

    What the fault can affect3

    • The throttle closes when braking, and pedal input is ignored while the brake is pressed
    • On turbo engines and 6-cylinder naturally aspirated engines, the cruise control is switched off during the driving cycle when the fault was detected
    • During the driving cycle when the fault is active, no substitute values are generated

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
