What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) has registered that the signal from potentiometer 1, the first throttle position sensor, is too high, and the code is set. The cause can be poor contact, an open or voltage-shorted signal cable, or an open earth lead to the potentiometers.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation between the ECM and the throttle unit
- Signal cable has an open circuit or is short-circuited to voltage
- Open circuit in the earth lead to potentiometers 1 and 2
- Damaged throttle unit
What you can do
- 1Check the connectors between the ECM and the throttle unit for contact resistance and oxidation
- 2Use a multimeter to check that the earth lead to the throttle unit potentiometers has no open circuit
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the signal cable has no open circuit and is not short-circuited to voltage
- 4If nothing is found and the code returns as permanent, have a workshop replace the throttle unit and carry out the adaptation
Symptoms you may notice1
- The engine responds to the accelerator less well than normal
What the fault can affect2
- Potentiometer 2 takes over the throttle angle calculation
- When potentiometers 1 and 2 both report faults together, the throttle motor loses its supply and the throttle returns to rest
