What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module (ECM) monitors the signal from potentiometer 2, the second throttle position sensor in the throttle unit. If the signal is faulty, the code is set. The fault can come from poor contact, signal cables short-circuited to each other, or a damaged throttle unit.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors between the ECM and the throttle unit
- Signal cables shorted together
- Damaged throttle unit
What you can do
- 1Check the connectors between the ECM and the throttle unit for contact resistance and oxidation
- 2Use a multimeter to check that the signal cables are not short-circuited to each other
- 3If the code returns as permanent after the connectors have been checked, the throttle unit may need replacing by a workshop, followed by an adaptation
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: follow the throttle position from potentiometer 2 in live data and check that the value follows the accelerator pedal movement smoothly
Symptoms you may notice1
- The car's performance is reduced
What the fault can affect2
- Potentiometer 1 takes over the throttle angle calculation
- If both potentiometers fail together, the throttle motor loses its supply and the throttle returns to rest
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
