What does this fault code mean?
The ECM has logged a fault inside itself, or a fault in the circuit to the throttle damper motor, and sets the code. The cause can be poor connections, open or short-circuited wiring to the damper motor, a damaged throttle unit, or a damaged ECM.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors between the ECM and the throttle unit
- Open circuit or short-circuit to ground or voltage in the wiring to the damper motor
- The wiring to the damper motor is short-circuited to each other
- Damaged throttle unit
- Damaged engine control module
What you can do
- 1Read off the fault codes and first remedy any that concern the throttle unit or the throttle position sensor, if they are stored
- 2Check the connectors between the ECM and the throttle unit for contact resistance and oxidation
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the damper motor wires have no open circuit and are not short-circuited to ground, voltage or each other
- 4If the fault stays permanent after these checks, a workshop may need to replace the throttle unit. Any replacement of the throttle unit or ECM needs an adaptation by a workshop.
Symptoms you may notice3
- The Check engine lamp lights
- The car's performance is reduced
- The idle is uneven
What the fault can affect1
- The ECM switches off the supply to the throttle motor, and the throttle moves to its spring-returned position
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
