What does this fault code mean?

The code means the signal from the throttle unit is too low. It is stored when the engine control module (ECM) tries to adapt the throttle unit and detects restricted throttle movement, or a return spring that is not working properly.

    Possible causes

    • The throttle is sticking or blocked, for example by oil film or dust
    • Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors linking the ECM to the throttle unit
    • Open circuit, or short to ground or supply voltage, in the wiring to the throttle motor
    • The throttle motor wires shorted to each other
    • A damaged throttle unit

    What you can do

    1. 1Read and note the fault codes. If codes for the throttle unit, throttle position sensor or ECM are also stored, deal with those first
    2. 2Check that nothing is blocking the throttle and that it is not sticking. Clean as needed
    3. 3Check that the connectors at the throttle unit and the ECM are secure and free from corrosion
    4. 4Use a multimeter to check that the throttle motor wiring has no open circuit, no contact with ground (body) or supply voltage, and no short to each other
    5. 5If you have a diagnostic tool: follow the throttle angle in live data while the pedal is pressed and released. It should change smoothly, without jumps
    6. 6If the code returns, this points to a damaged throttle unit. If it is replaced it must be adapted, which a workshop with diagnostic equipment does

    Symptoms you may notice2

    • Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on
    • Reduced engine performance

    What the fault can affect1

    • Depending on the fault, the ECM may cut power to the throttle motor, and the throttle then returns to its spring-loaded position

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
