What does this fault code mean?
The code means the signal from the throttle unit is too high. It is stored when the engine control module (ECM) attempts to adapt the throttle unit and finds restricted throttle movement, or an opening spring that is not working properly.
Possible causes
- The throttle is sticking or blocked by oil film, dust or similar
- Contact resistance or oxidation linking the ECM to the throttle unit
- Open circuit, or short to ground or supply voltage, in the wiring to the throttle motor
- Short circuit between the wires to the throttle motor
- A damaged throttle unit
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes and deal first with any that relate to the throttle unit, throttle position sensor or ECM, as they may be the cause
- 2Look for anything blocking the throttle and check that it is not sticking. Clean as needed
- 3Check the connectors between the ECM and the throttle unit: are they secure, and is there corrosion
- 4Use a multimeter on the throttle motor wiring for open circuit, contact with ground or supply voltage, and a short between the two wires
- 5If you have a diagnostic tool: follow the throttle angle in live data while the pedal is pressed and released. It should change smoothly, without jumps
- 6If the code returns, this points to a damaged throttle unit, which then needs replacing and adapting. A workshop with diagnostic equipment does this
Symptoms you may notice2
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on
- Reduced engine performance
What the fault can affect1
- Depending on the fault, the ECM may cut the supply to the throttle motor so that the throttle goes to its spring-loaded position
