What does this fault code mean?
The ECM cannot complete the throttle unit's first adaptation, because the programmed limit for the mechanical stop position of the throttle position sensor has been exceeded. Adaptation is normally done at manufacture and must be repeated after a software, ECM or throttle unit change. Although the code is titled faulty signal, it concerns this adaptation.
Possible causes
- The throttle sticks or is blocked by oil film or dust
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors between the ECM and the throttle unit
- No new adaptation has been done after a software, ECM or throttle unit change
- A damaged throttle unit
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes. Other stored codes should be dealt with first, as they may be why the adaptation cannot be completed
- 2Check the connectors at the throttle unit and the ECM: are they secure and free from corrosion
- 3Check that the throttle is not blocked by any object and not sticking. Clean as needed
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: check in the parameters whether the throttle unit adaptation shows OK. The adaptation itself is carried out by a workshop
- 5After a software, ECM or throttle unit change the adaptation must be repeated. Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment do this
- 6If the fault remains after this, the throttle unit may be damaged. It would then need replacing, and the new unit must be adapted by a workshop
Symptoms you may notice3
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on
- Reduced performance
- Uneven idle
What the fault can affect3
- The ECM falls back on nominal values for the throttle unit's parameters
- The ECM cuts power to the throttle motor, so the throttle goes to its return position
- The ECM may use a reversible fuel shut-off, meaning a temporary one
