What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is titled signal missing, it concerns a fault the ECM has registered on the steering wheel module (SWM) or on its CAN link. The fault may also lie in the CEM, BCM or TCM, or in the wiring between them.
Possible causes
- The cause may lie in the steering wheel module (SWM)
- The cause may lie in the central electronic module (CEM)
- Open circuit in a CAN wire
- Short circuit between the CAN wires
- The ECM itself has an internal fault
- Internal fault in another module on the same part of the CAN network
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes in the CEM and other affected modules first. The code should not be cleared until those are remedied
- 2Then read the steering wheel module (SWM) fault codes and deal with them
- 3Check the CAN wires for breaks and chafing. Use a multimeter to see whether any wire is open or shorted to another
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: see whether the steering wheel module responds when read with the ignition on, and whether the cruise control buttons register
- 5If the fault remains once the other codes are remedied, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment decide where the fault sits
Symptoms you may notice1
- Cruise control does not function at all
What the fault can affect1
- Cruise control is switched off
