What does this fault code mean?
Although the code is titled signal too high, it concerns a problem the ECM has registered on the steering wheel module (SWM) or on its CAN link. The CEM, BCM or TCM can also be the source.
Possible causes
- Steering wheel module (SWM) fault
- A fault in the central electronic module (CEM)
- Break in one of the CAN wires
- Short circuit between the CAN wires
- Internal fault in the ECM
- Internal fault in another module on the same section of the CAN network
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes in the CEM and other affected modules first. The code cannot be cleared until those are remedied
- 2Then read the steering wheel module (SWM) fault codes and deal with them
- 3Check that the CAN wires are not chafed or broken, and use a multimeter to check they are not shorted to each other
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: check whether the steering wheel module responds when read, and whether any module on the CAN network does not respond
- 5If the fault remains once the other codes are remedied, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment decide whether the ECM itself is at fault
Symptoms you may notice1
- Cruise control does not function at all
What the fault can affect1
- Cruise control is switched off
