What does this fault code mean?
The code can be set in two ways. Either the ECM receives a faulty signal from the brake control module (BCM) over CAN, or the BCM receives a signal from the brake position sensor that is outside its permitted range. The fault may therefore lie in the CAN communication, the BCM or the sensor.
Possible causes
- Fault in the CAN communication between the ECM and the brake control module (BCM)
- The fault may lie in the brake control module (BCM)
- Damaged brake position sensor
- Damaged brake control module (BCM)
What you can do
- 1Read the BCM fault codes first and then the CEM codes, and deal with them. The code cannot be cleared until they are remedied
- 2If you have a diagnostic tool: check that the BCM and CEM respond when read, with the ignition on
- 3Check the CAN wires for breaks and chafing, and that the connectors are free from corrosion
- 4Check that the brake position sensor is fixed in place and that its connector is clean and secure
- 5The brake system is safety-critical. If the fault remains, have a workshop check the BCM and the sensor, and do not drive with a safety fault in the brakes

- Cruise control does not function at all
- Driving with automatic engine start/stop does not work
- Idling with automatic engine start/stop does not work
- Starting with autostart does not work
- Cruise control cannot be engaged
