What does this fault code mean?
The brake pedal position from the sensor and the brake light switch state do not agree. The ECM sets the code when the switch does not close while the pedal is pressed, and the sensor shows a high position for a longer time. The cause may be a break in the signal wire, or a damaged or misadjusted brake light switch.
Possible causes
- Break in the signal wire
- Damaged brake light switch
- Brake light switch misadjusted
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes in the ECM and deal first with any codes for the brake pedal sensor or the brake light switch
- 2Check that the switch and the sensor at the pedal are secure, and that the pedal mounting looks sound
- 3Use a multimeter to check that the wire from the brake light switch is not broken
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: compare the brake pedal position in live data with the pedal released and with it pressed. The difference should be clear
- 5The brake system is safety-critical. If the fault remains, have a workshop check it, and do not drive with a safety fault in the brakes
Symptoms you may notice3
- ETS warning lamp on
- Cruise control does not function at all
- Brake light constantly on
What the fault can affect2
- Cruise control is off for the driving cycle in which the fault was detected
- Function returns at the next start, if the fault is no longer there
