What does this fault code mean?
The code means the engine idles more slowly than expected. The engine control module (ECM) regulates idle speed and has registered that the actual idle speed has been below the limit value for a certain time. During a cold start the ECM raises idle on purpose to warm up the catalytic converter.
Possible causes
- Blocked intake system
- Blocked exhaust system
- Fault in the air or fuel system, for example leakage or blockages
What you can do
- 1If idle is low and uneven: check that the intake and exhaust systems are not blocked
- 2With a diagnostic tool, follow idle speed in live data for a while and see whether it drops below normal more often than expected
- 3After repair: clear the code and let the engine idle for a while to check that idle stays steady
- 4If the fault remains or idle stays low and uneven, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment search for the cause in the air and fuel system
Symptoms you may notice3
- Malfunction indicator lamp lit
- Idle speed is low
- Engine runs unevenly at idle
