ECM-980C - Neutral position sensor. Jammed
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
3 modelsC30 (2007–2013), S40 (2004–2013), V50 (2004–2013)
What does this fault code mean?
The ECM monitors gear selector position while auto start/stop is running. The neutral position sensor should give a voltage level that changes when the gears are shifted. If the signal does not change as expected, but is stuck or varies only within a narrow range, the code is set.
Possible causes
- Play, contact resistance or oxidation in the connector
- Short circuit or open circuit in the wiring to the neutral position sensor
- Incorrect fitting of the neutral position sensor to the gearbox
- Damaged linkage arm that the neutral position sensor is fitted to
- Damaged neutral position sensor
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact
- 2If you have a diagnostic tool: read the neutral position sensor signal in live data while shifting gears, and see whether the value changes in step with the gear selection
- 3Check that the connector on the neutral position sensor is firmly seated and free from oxidation, and that the linkage arm is not damaged
- 4If the fault remains after these checks, have a workshop check that the sensor is correctly fitted and replace it if needed
Symptoms you may notice2
- Automatic start/stop does not work while driving or at idle
- Autostart does not work when starting
What the fault can affect1
- The automatic start/stop function is switched off
