What does this fault code mean?
The ECM works out the air mass entering the engine from throttle position, engine speed, air temperature and atmospheric pressure, among other inputs. The calculated value is compared with the signals from the air mass meter and the intake pressure sensor. If either sensor deviates enough, the code is stored.
Possible causes
- Faulty signal from one of the sensors
- Exhaust camshaft has slipped a tooth
- Air leakage after the air mass meter
- Defective intake manifold pressure sensor
- Defective air mass meter
- Defective engine control module
What you can do
- 1Check for air leaks after the air mass meter, in the hoses and connections on the intake side
- 2If you have a diagnostic tool: read air mass and intake manifold pressure in live data at idle and when pressing the throttle; they should follow engine load
- 3Check that the air mass meter and the intake manifold pressure sensor are firmly fitted and have clean connectors
- 4If the exhaust camshaft may have slipped a tooth, have a workshop check the camshaft position against the crankshaft
- 5Uneven idle can come from the control module running on substitute values, which is not the same as a drivability fault that existed before. After repair: clear the code and test drive
Symptoms you may notice2
- Uneven idle
- Malfunction indicator lamp lit
What the fault can affect3
- The throttle closes under braking, and pedal input is ignored while the brake is pressed
- Cruise control is switched off for the driving cycle in which the fault was detected
- Engine speed is limited by fuel cut-off and capped at a low value
