What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module continuously monitors its read-only memory (ROM), where the module's program is stored. The code is set when a fault is found in that memory. Although the code is named faulty signal, it actually concerns the module's own program storage, and the module tries to restart itself, so the engine may stall or fail to start.
Possible causes
- The software in the engine control module is faulty
- The engine control module is damaged
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and start the engine to see whether it returns
- 2Check that the battery terminals and the module connectors are fully seated
- 3If the fault remains, a workshop can download new software into the module; this needs equipment and is not something to do at home
- 4If new software does not help, the module is probably damaged and must be replaced, and the new module is then given the correct software by a workshop
Symptoms you may notice4
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is on
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) flashes
- The engine stalls
- The engine does not start although the starter motor turns
What the fault can affect1
- The engine control module restarts itself
