What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module continuously checks its internal restart function. The code is set when a fault is found in that function, and the fault then lies in the module itself rather than in a sensor or wiring. During the restart the engine may stall or fail to start.
Possible causes
- Faulty software in the engine control module
- Damaged engine control module (ECM)
What you can do
- 1Read the code, clear it and start the engine to see whether it returns
- 2If it returns, have a workshop try downloading new software into the module; this needs the right equipment
- 3If new software does not solve the problem, the module must be replaced, and the new one also needs the correct software; a workshop should do this
Symptoms you may notice4
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is on
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) flashes
- The engine stalls
- The starter motor turns without the engine starting
What the fault can affect1
- The engine control module tries to restart itself
