What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module has activated substitute values in one or more of its diagnostic functions, and this has affected how the car drives. The code is set when the module detects that drivability has been negatively affected. Other fault codes for components or functions that are not working are then likely to be stored as well, and these should be fault-traced first.
Possible causes
- A fault detected by another diagnostic function, whose substitute value worsens drivability
What you can do
- 1Read all the fault codes in the engine control module and note which are stored
- 2Fault-trace the other codes first, since they probably point to components or functions that are not working
- 3With a diagnostic tool, compare the ranking values; a high Worst with a low Latest points to an intermittent fault or one that is not active
- 4Remedy the faults, clear the fault codes and road test the car to see whether this code returns
Symptoms you may notice5
- Autostart does not work
- The engine fails to start
- Cruise control does not work at all
- Jerky operation and uneven idle
- Poor accelerator pedal response, and the accelerator pedal is ignored when braking
