What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module has registered a communication fault with the transmission control module (TCM) over the CAN network. The cause may be an open circuit in the CAN wiring or a defective transmission control module. A noticeable sign is harsh gear shifting.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the CAN wiring
- Defective transmission control module (TCM)
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes in the engine control module and in the central electronic module (CEM); if there are codes for failed communication there, fault-trace those first
- 2Check the connectors and wiring harness between the engine control module and the transmission control module for open circuits, chafing and oxidation
- 3With a multimeter, check whether the CAN wires have an open circuit or a short to ground or supply voltage; disconnect the battery negative lead before measuring so the result is correct
- 4If the fault remains and the wiring is sound, the transmission control module is probably defective and should be replaced; leave this to a workshop
