What does this fault code mean?
The brake control module (BCM) has detected a fault on the speed signal and sends a fault message to the engine control module, which then sets the code. The fault may lie in the CAN communication, in a signal wire that is short-circuited, or in one of the modules. The code therefore indicates that the fault most likely sits in a module other than the engine control module.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the CAN terminals
- Open circuit in one or both CAN wires
- One or both signal wires short-circuited to ground, supply voltage or each other
- Damaged brake control module (BCM)
- Damaged engine control module (ECM)
What you can do
- 1The code indicates that the fault most likely lies in another module, so fault-trace from the module that sends the signal, which is the brake control module (BCM)
- 2Read the fault codes in the brake control module and deal with them first; this code cannot be cleared until the root fault is remedied and its code cleared
- 3Check the CAN network connectors and wires for open circuits, short circuits and chafing
- 4The brake control module is safety-critical, so do not work on it yourself; have a workshop check it
Symptoms you may notice1
- Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is on
What the fault can affect1
- The brake control module's speed signal is replaced by a fixed value
