What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module has registered serious interference on the CAN network, which blocks communication. The fault may come from contact resistance in the connections, an open or short-circuited CAN wire, or an internal fault in the engine control module or in another module on the same part of the network. Because the engine control module cannot be reached during a serious fault, the code mainly appears when the fault is intermittent.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the terminals
- Open circuit in one of the CAN wires
- Short circuit between the CAN wires
- Internal fault inside the ECM
- Internal fault in another module on the same part of the CAN network
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes in the central electronic module (CEM); if there are codes for failed communication there, fault-trace those first
- 2Check the connectors and wiring of the CAN network for open circuits, short circuits, oxidation and chafing
- 3Disconnect the battery negative lead and use a multimeter to check that the CAN wires have no open circuit or short to ground or supply voltage
- 4If the fault cannot be found, have a workshop identify which module is disturbing the network, since this needs measuring and disconnecting modules
Symptoms you may notice5
- General warning lamp on
- Cruise control does not work at all
- The engine judders under acceleration
- The engine judders heavily after engine braking
- Uneven idle
What the fault can affect2
- The engine control module shuts itself off (bus-off)
- It stays off until the power supply is interrupted; when power is restored it makes new attempts to communicate
