What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module drives the starter motor through the starter relay and checks that it works. The code is set when the ignition switch's start signal goes missing while the engine runs and no vehicle speed is registered, or when a start signal appears during driving when it should not. Faults in other systems, such as brake or clutch faults, can also trigger it.
Possible causes
- Short circuit from the ignition switch signal cable to supply voltage
- Short circuit from the ignition switch signal cable to ground
- Open circuit in the ignition switch signal cable
- Damaged starter relay
- A fault in any of the brake, clutch or start circuits
- A fault code in another control module
What you can do
- 1Check the fuse for the ignition switch signal cable; if it is blown, check the cable for a short to ground
- 2If the fuse is intact, check the ignition switch signal cable with a multimeter for a short to supply voltage, a short to ground and an open circuit
- 3If the fault is in the brake or clutch circuit, have a workshop check it; do not work on the braking system yourself
- 4Road test the car after the repair to see whether the fault code returns
