What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module checks that the engine start signal is sent over CAN from the central electronic module (CEM). The code is set when that signal is missing, and the check only starts once the engine is running. Autostart and starting can then be affected.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the communication cable
- Short circuit to ground in the communication cable
- Short circuit to supply voltage in the communication cable
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Open circuit in the connections
- Short circuit in the connections
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes in the central electronic module (CEM) and in the other modules on the CAN network, and deal with them first
- 2Check the connectors and wiring of the CAN network for open circuits, short circuits, oxidation and chafing
- 3With a multimeter, check that the communication cable has no open circuit and no contact with ground or supply voltage; disconnect the battery negative lead first
- 4After the repair, start the car and read the fault codes again to see whether the communication fault has cleared
Symptoms you may notice3
- Autostart does not occur
- The engine does not start, and it is unpredictable when it does
- Starting and autostart do not work
What the fault can affect1
- The signal on the direct cable to the engine control module is used instead
General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
