System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
2 modelsS80 (2007–), V70 (2008–)
Show models by year and engine (2)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module compares its own configuration ID with the signal configuration ID that the central electronic module (CEM) sends regularly over the CAN network. The code is set when the two IDs do not match. This can happen when the module is not intended for this car, or when the CAN wires between the modules are open.
Possible causes
- Incorrect CAN configuration ID, because the engine control module is not intended for the car, for example a used module with different software or hardware
- Open circuit in the CAN wires between the module and the CEM
What you can do
- 1Read the fault codes in the engine control module and in the central electronic module (CEM), and deal first with the CAN-related codes
- 2Check that the engine control module is intended for this particular car; a used module with different software or hardware can cause this code
- 3Disconnect the battery negative lead and measure the resistance in the CAN wires with a multimeter; the reading will be wrong if the network is still powered
- 4Do not replace the central electronic module for a CAN fault unless fault-tracing shows that it has an internal fault
Symptoms you may notice5
- General warning lamp on
- Cruise control does not work at all
- The engine judders slightly under acceleration
- Strong shuddering after engine braking
- Uneven idle
