What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module has detected an overload in the main battery relay while controlling it, which can mean that the relay driver stage is getting too hot. The fault is usually intermittent and may be gone when the car is checked. Automatic start/stop is switched off, and the engine may have difficulty starting.
Possible causes
- Overload in the connected components
- Loose connection or oxidized connectors
- Short circuit on the connections
- Damaged battery relay
- Mechanical or electrical fault on the relay
- Wiring to the relay is shorted or broken
What you can do
- 1Check that the fuses are intact
- 2Check that the battery is charged and that the battery terminals are tight
- 3Check that the connectors at the relay and the engine control module are tight, have no play and are not corroded
- 4Check whether there are other fault codes in the engine control module and fix them first, since this code is often stored together with them
- 5Erase the fault code and road test the car to see whether the fault returns
- 6When no fault can be found outside the module, the driver stage inside the engine control module may be faulty. Have a workshop check it and replace the module if needed
Symptoms you may notice2
- Automatic engine start/stop does not work, both while driving and at idle
- The engine does not start, the starter motor does not turn and there is no clicking sound at start attempts
What the fault can affect2
- The automatic engine start/stop function is switched off
- Starting can be prevented when the relay does not work
