What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module receives continuous information about the brake pedal position and status from the brake control module (BCM) over CAN. The fault is stored when the signal from the brake control module stops, or when the brake light switch and the brake position switch do not agree. The cruise control is then disengaged for as long as the fault is active.
Possible causes
- Open circuit in the communication cable
- Communication cable short-circuited to ground
- Communication cable short-circuited to supply voltage
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Open circuit or short circuit in the connections
What you can do
- 1Read out the fault codes in the engine control module and the brake control module (BCM), and fix the CAN-related codes first
- 2Check that the fuses are intact and that the connectors at the engine control module and the brake control module are tight and not corroded
- 3Check that the brake lights come on when the pedal is pressed and that the brake pedal switch is firmly mounted
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the brake pedal position in live data and check that the value changes when you press and release the brake
- 5Use a multimeter to check that the communication cable has no contact with ground or supply voltage with the connectors disconnected
- 6The fault concerns the braking system. If the brakes feel uncertain, do not drive the car and have a workshop check it
