What does this fault code mean?
The code says that the signal between control modules is missing. The engine control module has registered a serious disturbance on the high speed side of the CAN network, so communication is blocked and the module cannot be reached.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connections
- Open circuit in one of the CAN wires
- Short circuit between the CAN wires
- Internal fault in the engine control module
- Internal fault in some other control module on the same section of the CAN network
What you can do
- 1Start by reading the fault codes from the CEM and the other control modules. There is no specific fault-tracing procedure for this code
- 2Check that the fuses are intact and that the battery is connected
- 3Check the connectors in the CAN network at the engine control module and the CEM for corrosion and loose contacts
- 4Look for breaks and chafing on the CAN wires, especially where they bend or are pinched
- 5Erase the fault codes only after the other faults are fixed, then road test the car to see whether the fault returns
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the CAN network with diagnostic equipment
Symptoms you may notice2
- A warning message or warning symbol appears in the display
- The Check engine warning lamp lights up or behaves abnormally
