What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module keeps watch on the CAN link to the additive dosing module (ADM) used in exhaust aftertreatment. The fault code is set when the engine control module finds that the link to the ADM is not working. The fault can be caused by an open circuit, poor contact, or an ADM that is not intended for this car.

    Possible causes

    • Look for CAN-related fault codes in the additive dosing module (ADM)
    • The additive dosing module (ADM) receives no supply voltage
    • Poor contact, loose connector or oxidation in the connections
    • Open circuit in the CAN wiring to the additive dosing module (ADM)
    • Internal fault in another control module on the same section of the CAN network
    • The additive dosing module does not belong to this car, for example a used unit with other software or hardware fitted

    What you can do

    1. 1Read out the fault codes in the additive dosing module (ADM) and in the engine control module, and fix the CAN-related codes first
    2. 2Check that the fuses supplying the additive dosing module are intact
    3. 3Check the connectors at the additive dosing module and the engine control module for loose contacts and corrosion
    4. 4Look for chafing or pinched sections on the CAN wires running to the additive dosing module
    5. 5If the module has been replaced, check that it is intended for this exact car and has the correct software
    6. 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the communication with diagnostic equipment

    Symptoms you may notice2

    • A text message and warning symbol appear in the display
    • The fault lamp lights up or behaves abnormally

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
