Volvo models this fault code applies to
This fault code has different meanings depending on model, model year or engine. Select the meaning that applies to your car.
Applies to the following models:
4 modelsC30 (2007–2013), C70 (2006–2013), S40 (2004–2013), V50 (2004–2013)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module cannot communicate with the central electronic module (CEM), which holds the vehicle immobilizer code. During start-up, the key is verified and the immobilizer codes held in the engine control module and the CEM are compared, and without that link starting can become difficult.
Possible causes
- Open circuit on one of the CAN cables
- Short circuit between the CAN cables
- Damaged engine control module
What you can do
- 1Read out the fault codes in the CEM and in the engine control module, and fix the CAN codes first
- 2Check the battery charge and that the fuses are intact
- 3Check the connectors at the engine control module and the CEM for play and corrosion
- 4Look for breaks and chafing on the CAN cables between the engine control module and the CEM
- 5Erase the fault code only when the CEM faults are fixed, then try several starts to check
- 6If the engine control module is suspected to be faulty, have a workshop check and replace it. Programming control modules is workshop work
Symptoms you may notice2
- The engine is hard to start
- The starter motor cranks slowly, and the problem can occur at any time or only at some starts
