What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module communicates with the alternator control module (ACM) over the LIN bus. The fault code is set when the engine control module detects a fault in that communication. The alternator warning lamp can light with the engine running, and a message can appear in the display.
Possible causes
- Faulty signal
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors
- Damaged alternator control module (ACM)
- Signal missing
- Open circuit on the signal cable
What you can do
- 1Inspect the ACM connector for contact resistance and oxidation
- 2Check that the alternator is bolted down firmly so that it has a good earth connection
- 3Disconnect the connector at the engine control module and check the signal cable for breaks, for a short to ground and for a short to supply voltage
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: start the engine and read the alternator charging current in live data. The value should be steady while the engine runs
- 5If the alternator has been replaced, check that it is designed for LIN communication
- 6If the fault remains after these checks, have a workshop check the alternator control module
Symptoms you may notice2
- The Gen. not charging warning lamp lights with the engine running
- A message appears in the information display
