What does this fault code mean?

The engine control module checks its own configuration ID against the one the CEM broadcasts on CAN. The fault code is set when they do not match, and the module then shuts itself off while still answering diagnostic commands. One possible reason is a module that is not meant for this car, or one that was replaced without the correct software.

    Possible causes

    • Wrong configuration ID: the module does not belong to this vehicle, for instance a used unit with other software or hardware
    • Open circuit in the CAN wiring between the module and the CEM

    What you can do

    1. 1If the module has been replaced, ask a workshop to check that the correct software is loaded, since a replacement without new software gives this code
    2. 2Read out the fault codes in the CEM and in the other control modules, and fix the CAN codes first
    3. 3Check that the fuses are intact and that the battery has a good charge
    4. 4Look for breaks, chafing and pinched sections on the CAN wiring to the CEM
    5. 5Erase the fault code once the faults are fixed, then road test the car to see whether it comes back
    6. 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the wiring in the CAN network with diagnostic equipment, and replace the module only as a last resort

    Symptoms you may notice1

    • No noticeable symptoms for the driver

    What the fault can affect2

    • The module shuts itself off (bus-off)
    • The module still responds to diagnostic commands while the fault code is stored

General guidance for car owners. Diagnosis on the car can point to a different cause.
