VOLVO
ECM-C404 - Invalid Data Received From Gear Shift Control Module
System
Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
Applies to the following models:
4 modelsC30 (2007–2013), C70 (2006–2013), S40 (2004–2013), V50 (2004–2013)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module takes in data from the gearbox control module (TCM) over CAN. The fault code is set when messages are lost on the CAN network. It is stored first in the transmission control module and then in the engine control module, so the root fault should be fixed first.
Possible causes
- Faulty CAN communication
- Internal fault in the gearbox control module (TCM)
What you can do
- 1There is no specific fault-tracing for this code. Start in the transmission control module, since the root fault is stored there
- 2Fix the root fault, then erase the fault code in the transmission control module
- 3Erase the code in the engine control module only after the root fault code has been erased
- 4Check that the battery has a good charge and that the fuses are intact
- 5Look for breaks and chafing on the CAN wires between the engine control module and the transmission control module
- 6If the fault remains after these steps, have a workshop check the transmission control module with diagnostic equipment
Symptoms you may notice1
- No noticeable symptoms for the driver
