What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module checks the CAN signals coming from the brake control module (BCM) and records the fault when the signal is wrong. The fault may originate in codes stored in the brake control module, or in a unit that is not intended for this car.
Possible causes
- Diagnostic trouble codes stored in the brake control module (BCM)
- The brake control module is not made for this car, for example a used unit with other software or hardware
What you can do
- 1Read out the fault codes in the brake control module first, and fix them before erasing anything
- 2Check the fuses for the brake control module and that the battery has a good charge
- 3Check the connectors at the brake control module and the engine control module for play and corrosion
- 4Look for chafing and breaks on the CAN wires between the engine control module and the brake control module
- 5The brake control module governs the braking system and ABS. If the brakes feel uncertain, do not drive the car; have a workshop check it
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop confirm that the brake control module suits this car and carries the right software
Symptoms you may notice2
- A text message and warning symbol appear in the display
- The Check engine warning lamp lights up or behaves abnormally
