What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module monitors the signals from the brake control module (BCM) on CAN. When the signal is registered as wrong, the fault code is set. The cause may be faults already stored in the brake control module, or a unit that does not suit this car.
Possible causes
- Fault codes stored in the brake control module (BCM)
- The brake control module does not suit this car, for example if a used unit with other software or hardware has been fitted
What you can do
- 1Begin by reading out the brake control module fault codes and fixing them before anything is erased
- 2Check that the fuses are intact and that the battery is connected and charged
- 3Check the connectors at the brake control module and the engine control module for corrosion and loose contacts
- 4Look for breaks and chafing on the communication wire between the two modules
- 5If the brakes or ABS feel uncertain, do not drive the car. The brake control module governs ABS, so have a workshop check it
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop confirm that the brake control module is intended for this car and that its software is correct
Symptoms you may notice2
- A text message and warning symbol appear in the display
- The Check engine warning lamp lights up or behaves abnormally
