Engine Control Module (ECM)
Volvo models this fault code applies to
This fault code has different meanings depending on model, model year or engine. Select the meaning that applies to your car.
Applies to the following models:
4 modelsC30 (2007–2013), C70 (2006–2013), S40 (2004–2013), V50 (2004–2013)
What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module receives information from the CEM over CAN and compares the immobilizer code with the one held in the CEM. The fault is set when the codes do not match, for example when a control module from another vehicle has been fitted. The starter motor may then fail to operate.
Possible causes
- A control module from another vehicle has been fitted
- Fault-trace the central electronic module (CEM)
What you can do
- 1Find out whether a control module has been replaced and whether it came from another vehicle. If so, a workshop must match it to the correct car
- 2Read out the fault codes in the CEM, since fault-tracing starts there
- 3Check that the fuses are intact and that the battery has a good charge
- 4Look for breaks and chafing on the CAN wires between the engine control module and the CEM
- 5If the fault remains after these steps, have a workshop check and, if needed, reprogram the control modules
Symptoms you may notice1
- The starter motor does not turn over when the key is turned
