What does this fault code mean?
The engine control module has detected a fault in CAN communication, so the control modules that should talk to each other are out of step. The fault can lie in connectors, wiring, or in a control module.
Possible causes
- Contact resistance in the connections
- Short circuit between the CAN wires
- Open circuit in one of the CAN wires
- Internal fault in the control module
- Internal fault in another control module on the same network section
What you can do
- 1Read out the fault codes in the CEM and in the other control modules, and fix the CAN codes first
- 2Check the battery charge and that the fuses are intact
- 3Check the connectors at the engine control module and the CEM for play and corrosion
- 4Look for chafing and pinched sections along the wiring harness
- 5If a control module stays in limp-home mode, lift the battery negative terminal, wait a moment and reconnect it
- 6If the fault remains, have a workshop check the CAN network with diagnostic equipment
Symptoms you may notice5
- General warning lamp lit
- ETS warning lamp lit
- The cruise control does not work
- The engine jerks under acceleration
- It is not possible to switch over to gas operation
What the fault can affect3
- The cruise control is switched off
- The throttle closes when the brakes are applied
- The control module switches itself off (bus-off)
